There was an anxious feeling in the air as everyone made themselves busy in the lair, trying to keep their mind off of what would come the next day. It was Christmas Eve and everyone was excited for the next day. Raph couldn’t wait for the food, Splinter loved the television specials, Leo liked that his whole family was safely indoors, Don enjoyed the time when they all settled at night and he read a story aloud to them, and Mikey, of course, liked the presents.
Rafieo, though, didn’t know what he liked best about the holiday because he had yet to ever experience it. He figured that if he was still in the future he wouldn’t be celebrating the day with his brothers because they never really did anything as a family. Plus, he didn’t know how to celebrate the holiday and he doubted that they knew. Still, his mind couldn’t help but wonder to his two remaining brothers. How were they handling this holiday meant for families?
“Rafieo,” Mikey suddenly invaded his thoughts and his sight as the energetic turtle jumped on him, wrapping his arms around his neck and hanging onto him. “Merry Christmas,” Mikey grinned and kissed him deeply, slipping him a bit of tongue before he pulled away with a slurp.
Rafieo’s face warmed up and he smiled. “What was that for?” He asked.
“Well, I could tell that your mind wasn’t on the Christmas spirit of this season so I wanted to cheer you up.” Mikey dropped to the ground and pointed up. “Plus you’re standing under the mistletoe.” Rafieo blinked and looked up. Sure enough, a green plant with red berries and a matching red ribbon was above him. “I explained that tradition to you already,”
“Yeah,” Rafieo nodded. “I think it might be my favorite tradition.”
Mikey chuckled. “You can’t pick your favorite until you experience everything first.” Mikey suddenly bounced on his toes excitedly. “Oh this is going to be great! This is your first Christmas which gives me even more reason to act like an excited child! Master Splinter,” Mikey called from across the room as the aged rat walked out of his room. “Can we wake up really early tomorrow to open up our presents?”
“Of course, my son,” Splinter smiled and continued on his way to the kitchen.
Raph groaned and popped his head up from over the couch. “The one day we’re allowed ta sleep in and you wanna get up even earlier than usual? What is yer problem, Mikey?”
“It’s Rafieo’s first Christmas, Raph! We have to do everything properly and that includes running around the house screaming that it’s Christmas to get everyone up before the sun rises.”
“We don’t even see the sun down here, Mikey.” Don grinned as he strode out of his lab. “Besides, you know Raph will just end up stealing your alarm clock like every other week so you’re the last one up again.”
“Not this year,” Mikey smirked. “I hid my alarm clock already.”
“You mean in the back corner of yer room behind yer comic books?” Raph grinned and turned back to the television.
“Aw, Raph!” Mikey pouted. “Donnie, can you build me a new alarm clock before tonight?” He asked, pushing out his bottom lip.
Don rolled his eyes. “I’m going over to Leatherhead’s to put the finishing touches on all of your gifts. If you’d rather receive a clock for your gift instead of what I’ve already made you I suppose I could…”
“No, no!” Mikey quickly shook his head. “Besides, then I’d get the clock tomorrow and it’d be too late anyway.”
“Aren’t you usually finished with all of our gifts before Thanksgiving, Don?” Leo asked as he stood from the couch and headed into the kitchen to grab drinks for himself and Raph.
“Usually but we did loose some time since we were in the future. Besides, one certain gift is giving me problems.” Don frowned.
“Is it my gift?” Mikey asked with a wide grin. “Is it a giant, cool super robot?”
“No and of course not,” Don smiled. “Well, I’m off to Leatherhead’s then.” He waved and left the lair.
“Don makes the best gifts,” Mikey assured Rafieo. He just nodded. He’d have to take Mikey’s word for it.
They spent the rest of the afternoon lying around the lair, watching television, talking, low key things merely to pass the time. After dinner, Mikey jumped up enthusiastically and grabbed Rafieo’s arm.
“Come on, Rafieo, I want to show you my favorite part of Christmas time.” He grinned and insistently pulled at him.
“Take scarves at least,” Leo spoke up from the table, the only one to say anything. Rafieo’s eyes narrowed in suspicion as he was pulled away. Mikey wrapped himself up in his long orange scarf and grabbed Rafieo’s green scarf to offer to him with a wide grin. Rafieo continued to stare at Mikey with a suspicious look but took the scarf and wrapped himself up in it.
Mikey led him through the sewers, all the while humming some Christmas carol, and eventually came to the tunnel opening that led to the park. It was the widest entrance besides the one that led to the turtle’s garage and actually allowed Rafieo to fit through it.
The two stepped out of the sewer system and Rafieo gasped as his feet hit a cold, white substance on the ground. “What the…?” He looked over at Mikey and was suddenly pelted in the face with some of the white stuff.
Rafieo sputtered and wiped his face.
Mikey grinned, “This is called snow. It’s what we get when it’s too cold for rain. And this,” Mikey held up some of the snow and molded it into a ball. “Is called a snowball; we use it for snowball fights.” He chucked the ball at Rafieo and it hit him on his plastron. Mikey chuckled and Rafieo smirked as he bent down and scooped up a large handful of snow.
“It’s on,” he declared.

Once they finally finished the ‘ultimate snowball fight of champions,’ as Mikey called it, the two stepped back into the sewer to get some feeling back into their feet. Halfway through the snowball fight, Rafieo had gotten a memory of Raph’s about snow and was now nursing a minor headache.
Mikey’s feet were feeling better, since he was used to walking around in snow more than Rafieo, so he quickly jumped onto his shell and kicked his legs and arms.
“Now this,” Mikey grinned as he jumped up and motioned to his creation. “Is called a snow--”
“Angel,” Rafieo smiled and stepped up beside Mikey. Mikey’s eyes widened for a moment then he smiled back and nodded. Rafieo took his hand in his own and nuzzled his head. “My orange angel,” he whispered.
“Puppy,” Mikey whispered back and leaned up for a quick kiss. Rafieo smiled and felt a bit warmer even surrounded by the snow. “Hey!” Mikey shouted suddenly, making Rafieo jump. “It’s starting to snow!” Mikey tilted his head back and stared up at the sky. Rafieo blinked and followed suit as he watched the snow move in the night sky, the stars echoes behind the moving snow.
“It’s like the stars are falling from the sky.” Rafieo observed, staring up at the sky with wonder. Mikey smiled back, a twinkle in his eye as he watched Rafieo. He squeezed Rafieo’s hand and the bigger turtle looked down at him with that innocent look. Mikey walked in front of him and took his other hand in his own.
Slowly, Mikey started to walk in a circle, forcing Rafieo to move with the motion. They started to spin, hands still locked together. Mikey tore his eyes away from Rafieo and leaned his head back, looking up at the stars and the snowflakes as they spun around and around.
The stars and snow overhead merged together into a beautiful scene of sparkles against a black sky and Mikey released a breathy laugh. He let go of Rafieo’s hands and continued to spin until he fell over onto his shell and made another snow angel.
Rafieo eventually came over and leaned over him. “I love you,” Mikey whispered up at him as though it was a secret only to be shared between them.
“I love you too,” Rafieo’s mouth twitched into a smile and he scooped Mikey up and threw him over his shoulder. “And if you really loved me ya’d want me to be warm. Come on, let’s go home.” Mikey giggled over his shoulder the entire way back and into their bedroom, despite the looks from his brothers.

“Guys!” Mikey whined as he finally emerged from his room the next morning near ten o’clock. “Why am I always the last one to wake up on Christmas?” He pouted as he quickly ran down the stairs. “Even Rafieo was awake before me.” Mikey pouted and slapped Rafieo’s arm. “Thanks for waking me, jerk.”
Rafieo chuckled. “You looked cute sleeping,” he mumbled against the cup of coco he was nursing.
“Fine, but we’re starting Christmas now then!” Mikey declared and jumped over the couch to his presents. “I’m handing mine out first!” He shouted excitedly and ran around the room passing out his gifts.

“And the last gift,” Don smiled as he stood up from the couch and stretched his left leg a bit. “Is from me, to Rafieo,”
Rafieo blinked and looked away from Mikey’s new Silver Sentry action figure that Don had rigged to actually fly with the remote he handmade for Mikey. Leatherhead wheeled in a rather large, wrapped thing that reminded Rafieo of one of those tall stationary mirrors.
“Is this the gift that was givin’ ya problems?” Raph asked as everyone eyed the large thing.
“Yeah, but I worked everything out eventually.” Don smiled as Rafieo stood and hesitantly stepped toward the gift.
“Dang, Donnie, this thing’s as big as me.” Rafieo eyed the large wrapped thing. “Thanks,”
“Unwrap it before you thank me,” Don smirked and Rafieo went to town ripping off the paper covering.
Now that it was uncovered, Rafieo blinked and tilted his head slightly. It was a large mirror. Or, at least, it seemed like it. “Um, thanks?”
“It’s a time portal, or at least, a prototype of a real one.” Don explained. “So far it can’t be used for time travel but you can look into it and see the future. I thought you might be a bit homesick and if you wanted to check in on Leon and Michael,” Don broke off his sentence with a shrug.
Rafieo bit at his beak and looked over at Don. He released his bottom lip and smiled brightly. “Thanks, Donnie,”
“Fire it up, Don!” Mikey yelled excitedly. “Let’s see what Leon and Michael are up to.” Don nodded and pressed a few buttons on the back of the ‘mirror.’ For a moment, the mirror blurred and then slowly images started to twist inside it. Then a dark sewer came into place and Rafieo smiled as he watched Leon come into view inside the mirror.
Leon carried two steaming mugs and sat down next to Michael on the worn out couch. Michael’s leg was propped up on the coffee table, still in a cast, and he grinned as he took one of the mugs offered to him.
“Merry Christmas, Michael,” Leon could be heard saying through the mirror. A small black cat suddenly jumped up onto Leon’s lap and he jumped a bit, spilling some of his hot liquid onto his arm. He hissed and sat his drink down as the cat jumped into Michael’s lap instead.
Michael chuckled as he watched Leon rub at his arm. He leaned over and planted a kiss on Leon’s cheek. “Merry Christmas, Leon,” Leon looked over at Michael and smiled as he settled back on the couch and wrapped his arm around his shoulder.
Mikey stood beside Rafieo and grabbed his hand. Rafieo turned away from the mirror and smiled down at him.
Later in the day, once the gifts were put away, except for Mikey’s new Turtle Titan cape that April had gotten him so he could have spares, they all sat down for dinner and Raph carved up the ham. Mikey skateboarded around the lair in his new cape afterwards and after Raph finally managed to tackle him off of the skateboard they had startled to settle down in front of Don on the couch.
“Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol,” Don started off, clearing his throat. Mikey leaned against Rafieo’s plastron as he sat in his lap and Rafieo smiled happily. He had finally figured out what his favorite part of Christmas was; everything.
