When Slade entered his newest main lair, he immediately began a search for a certain thief known as Red X. He had quite a few things to discuss with the boy. After all, Slade knew each villain of Jump City and they all respected, feared, and never challenged him. But Red X was a different story.
Slade didn’t know anything about the teen, but he did know that he was an exceptional thief to have stolen that suit from Robin. Not to mention to be able to escape Robin and his team mates every time.
He had heard about the boy, apparently he worked for himself, cared mostly about himself, and had quite a sarcastic mouth. Slade thought that he could respect someone like that. But the fact that Red X had moved onto his turf—Robin—meant that the boy wasn’t showing him respect, in fact, in meant that Red X was challenging him. For every villain knew that Robin was Slade’s and that if you singled him out, you’d be singling out Slade as well.
Being out of town for some time did put Slade behind a bit in the current situations of the Titans and the villains. Quickly reviewing a few tapes from multiple cameras that he had around Jump City, he saw that he hadn’t missed too much. Apparently during the two weeks that he was away, the Mad Mod had attacked at a concert, Control Freak tried to force a TV station to give him his own show, the Titans had gone out for pizza twelve out of the fourteen days, and Red X had stolen four items.
Getting right into work, Slade switched his monitors to play anything that had captured Red X on screen with Robin. Three out of the four times that Red X had broken into some place, Robin had gone after him alone. The first time was at Jump City’s museum where Red X had gotten away with a rather large jewel thanks to a homemade belt that wasn’t as good as his original one but helped him get into the sewers to escape.
The second event was at Jump’s finest jewelry store—maybe the boy had a thing for jewelry—and he took to the roofs where he surprised Robin by switching from defense to offense and…Slade slowed down the monitor as he watched Red X carefully pull the top half of his mask up and grab Robin as soon as he grappled up the roof. Slade watched as the thief forced Robin into a kiss and growled again as Robin wrapped his arms around his waist and pulled him closer. He couldn’t believe that Robin would do such a thing, even when the Boy Wonder’s hand brushed against the sack filled with jewels; he only continued to kiss Red X instead of continuing his fight for justice. Slade wished that his cameras were able to pick up sound as well but sadly he could only try to read Robin’s lips as the two teenagers pulled away.
Robin was in the middle of some word that could have been anything but a protest with the way his hands were rubbing at Red’s hips but Red X pulled his mask down again and must have interrupted him. Then the two were suddenly off of the roof and back into the alley that they had just come from. Slade’s cameras couldn’t follow the two into the alley, but he could imagine what happened then.
The third robbery was with all the Titans trying to get back the laser weapon that Red X had stolen but, again, the thief escaped into the sewers. That robbery seemed odd to Slade though, for the fact that the weapon didn’t seem like Red X’s type.
Red X may steal occasionally, but he didn’t seem to be that bad of a kid. He had helped Robin out in two situations, had been apart of the Brotherhood of Evil but hadn’t done anything except steal a few items for the league,—Wintergreen had confirmed to Slade—and he never used any type of weapon that could kill any of the guards that he had to knock unconscious.
Slade considered that the boy was greedy, but he seemed like a street kid and what street kid wasn’t greedy and survived this day and age? Red X probably stole the laser to sell to someone else, or he was hired to steal the weapon. If Slade’s second thought was correct, then finding Red X to talk to him was going to be a lot easier.
Just to finish his research fully, Slade watched the final robbery that Red X had pulled. Once again it was only Robin trying to intercept him. With jewels tied to his belt yet again, Red X had faced off with Robin on a rooftop. They exchanged some witty banter, apparently, and then Red X said something that made Robin’s entire face flush and the boy disappeared. The move startled both Robin and Slade.
He was sure that the boy had lost the ability to turn invisible when he had lost the suit’s original belt. Slade began to grow curious about Red X, about how the boy managed to gain such a skill and what exactly held Red X’s interest to Robin.
Calling a few of the lower villains that would die for a chance to get on Slade’s good side, Slade gathered all information about Red X known by the villain community. Apparently, no one else knew anything about the boy. Though he did receive Red X’s email address from Killer Moth; his suspicions about Red X being hired to steal the laser weapon were confirmed.
Behind his mask, Slade smirked as he easily got into contact with the boy. I’d like to hire you for a job, he typed. It should be simple for someone with your expertise and you shall be rewarded greatly if the task is completed. But I’d rather not give you the details now. Meet me at Pier 41 tomorrow night at midnight if you’re interested. He sends the short email without signing any name or having his address attached to it so the boy can’t reply. Red X will only have two options; show up, or don’t.
If he shows up, then Slade’s going to be able to talk to him. If he doesn’t, then Slade will simply wait until the next heist Red X attempts and interrupt him. Either way, Slade will end up talking to the boy, whether Red X wants to talk to him or not.
Red X walked into Pier 41 at exactly 11:59 pm. He was in his costume—of course—and seemed very tense. “Someone looking to hire me?” Red X called out into the dark warehouse. When he didn’t receive an answer he continued to talk nevertheless. “I’m not cheap, but if you want to make a trade that works fine for me as well.”
Slade watched as Red X jumped at the doors automatically closing behind him. He then stepped out of the shadows and he got a rather delightful feeling at watching the boy’s masked eyes widened. “Red X, you’re right on time.”
“I’d never have guessed that you actually had to hire people, I always thought you simply forced people into working for you.” Red X crossed his arms over his chest and glared. “Like Robin.” Slade folded his hands behind his back and began to close the distance between them.
“Interesting that you would mention Robin,” Slade returned the glare with interest and watched as Red X dropped his hands to his side, near his belt, which he noticed was the original belt. “How did you manage to get your old belt back?”
The boy didn’t take his eyes off of Slade but he did settle his hands on his belt. “Killer Moth and I made a deal. I distracted the Titans and also stole a laser that he wanted and in return he got me a replacement belt from Chang. Seeing as I’m not exactly on terms with the good Doctor ever since I ruined his little plans,” he paused for a millisecond, “with Robin.”
Slade stopped a foot in front of him. “You’re aware that I have no desire to hire you.” Red X nodded and slid into an attacking position as one hand dangled near his belt. Slade chuckled, amused by the boy’s antics and how much he seemed like Robin. “I’m not here to fight you, Red X; I simply wish to discuss your…relationships with my bird.”
“Robin doesn’t belong to you, that’s why he came to me.” Red X smirked behind his mask as he stood up straight again. “And that’s exactly why you’re jealous.”
Behind his own mask, Slade is scowling and wishing that he hadn’t already told the boy that he didn’t plan on fighting. Curse his word and his inability to break it. “I’m not jealous.” He stated. “Why would I be jealous when whatever was going on between you and Robin, is going to end tonight?”
“Are you going to make it end, tough guy?” Red X titled his head to the side. “I know that you can threaten me, but it won’t work. Robin has too fine of an ass for me to give it up.”
Taking a slow breath, Slade closed his eye and then opened it again. “I have a few questions for you, you will answer them truthfully—lie and I will know—and then you will walk out of this building alive if your answers are correct.”
“Is this some sort of test, because I was never really a straight A student.” Red X cracked his knuckles through his gloves.
Slade decided that he’d ignore all of Red’s sarcastic remarks and simply start asking the questions. “What does Robin mean to you?”
“A littler personal, don’t you think, Slade? Really now, this is only the first date. Robin and I didn’t get personal until our second date.” Red X waited for Slade to respond but after a minute of silence he finally sighed. “I feel for Robin exactly what he feels for me. We’re not serious, but in our lives how can we be?” Another long pause passed and Red X groaned behind his mask.
“Look, I know that Robin’s only into me because he can’t have his first choice. I’m his silver medal but I’m fine with that. Honestly, I’m positive that if Robin’s golden boy finally showed him feelings back then I would be dumped flat on my ass. I’m cool with that because I understand how he feels. My golden boy isn’t as into me as I hoped for but I’m settling with what I have to.” Red X scratched as his neck and sighed again. “That a good enough answer for you?”
“Quite, now then, how personal are you and Robin?” Slade was rather glad that his intimidation worked even on sarcastic teenagers.
“I don’t know his name, eye color, what his first word was, anything about Batman, nor do I know even a chapter of his life story. All I know is that he’s into someone else, that he really is a hero, and a phone number if I ever want to switch to the hero side.” Red X rolled his eyes under his mask. “And he knows that it’s never going to happen but he apparently knows me pretty well because he told me that the phone number can be used for everything but phone sex.”
Slade nodded his head, slowly. “And how many times have you two involved in sexual activity?”
“Well, I guess that includes foreplay, huh? We’ve been doing that for a few weeks now, ever since I started it all, so I can’t really give you a number; I’ve never really kept count. But we’ve only done it once, he was bottom, I used lube and a condom.” Red X folded his arms over his chest again. “Practice safe sex and all.”
“Good,” Slade was glad that Red X was at least smart enough to know that. “How did you and Robin start all of this?”
Red X laughed. “I caught the kid off guard one night, while he was thinking up on a rooftop, and we kind of declared a truce for the night. He started talking to me about some things and then the subject turned to our love-lives, or lack-there-of in our cases. So I brought up the fact that I wanted to blow him off and well, I did. Then he returned the favor.” Red X grinned behind the mask. “You missed your chance to have one awesome sex-slave apprentice.”
“So, you and Robin talk a lot?” Slade tried to keep the anger out of his voice but the way Red X tensed told him that his voice showed how mad he was. He would never do something like that; force someone into sex. Red X nodded as his answer and Slade hummed to himself to try and ease the tension. “Then tell him not to get caught off guard anymore. He should know his lesson now, but still, warn him about that.”
“What are you talking about?” Red X’s brow creased as he frowned. “Did you do something to him again?”
“I saved him from a bunch of punks that caught him off guard.” Slade took out a remote and pointed it at the large metal doors of the warehouse. He pressed the red button on the control and watched as the doors opened again. “You answered the questions correctly, Red X, you may leave.”
“Slade,” Red X didn’t turn from him. “I know that you know how Robin feels about you, just like I know how Robin feels about you. And well, I don’t think I can really keep up my relationship with him knowing that you two…I’m going to end it tomorrow and so if you want to catch the rebound, it might be the best chance for you.”
“He’s your first choice, isn’t he?” Slade asked just as Red X turned to leave.
Red X stilled with a heavy sigh. “My first choice is Robin loving me back, he doesn’t and he never will. But I had some time, got a lot of good memories, and I’m okay with it because I’ll know that he’ll be happy. Because if he’s not happy, Slade, I’ll kill myself trying to make him so.” With that said the thief left and an hour later, Slade went home as well.
It’s been three days since Robin last saw Slade, three days since he had been raped, and two days since he felt recovered from the incident. He didn’t tell his team anything, though Raven had offered to talk if he needed it after she had fully healed him and he suspected that she had read his mind. But no one else had treated him differently so he was glad that Raven kept quiet.
It’s also been a full five days without hearing anything from Red X so Robin wasn’t surprised when the thief caught him alone at night again. But he was utterly shocked when Red X pushed him away after their kiss and stated that it was their last kiss.
As Robin listened to Red X tell him that they were done, he only heard the hurt in Red X’s voice and couldn’t help but be so confused. And then as he thief turned invisible and ran off before Robin even got a word in, Robin was hurt. But he knew that he wasn’t as hurt as Red X was; especially since he didn’t have to deal with his pain for very long.
He was caught up in his thoughts again, but rewarded this time, by being pulled into an unsuspecting kiss. His masked eyes were wide and his mouth gasped open and whoever it was with the white hair, eye patch, and really, hot, thick, wonderful, talented tongue. When they pulled apart, and whoever opened his piercing, single eye, “Slade?” Robin chocked out.
Slade answered by pulling the boy into another air-stealing kiss. Once Robin was able to breathe again, and he didn’t realize that he had wrapped his arms around Slade’s neck but the man had his hand in his hair and one on his lower back so he supposed it was alright. “You look better without the disguise.”
“Did you have Raven heal your leg, or do I have to carry you again?” Slade asked as he lifted Robin before he could answer and sealed any protests with his mouth. Carrying the colorful kid back to his lair, Slade wondered why he had waited so long to finally make a hit obvious enough so that Robin got the message.
Back in his apartment, Red X sighed and removed his costume, turning back into the born street kid. He ran a hand through his shaggy hair and sighed miserably as he plopped down on the couch. He jerked when he sat on his cell phone and muttered to himself about leaving it in his room and how the hell it got on the couch.
When he flipped open his cell he saw that he had a new contact number added to it and grinned. “I think I might have to call ‘Threesome’ up some time.” He suddenly felt a lot better and stretched out on his couch with a happy grin across his face.
Slade didn’t know anything about the teen, but he did know that he was an exceptional thief to have stolen that suit from Robin. Not to mention to be able to escape Robin and his team mates every time.
