smallfandomfest prompt: Being the target of Hellboy's obsession can be a dangerous thing. I had three different ideas about this prompt. I wrote two of them. Then I combined the two and it fit nicely.
John had been getting gifts from a secret admirer for awhile now. It had started out just being something small placed in front of his door in the morning or on his desk in the afternoon with a little paper heart attached or stuck on via a sticky note. He had thought it was cute and had appreciated the thought that someone in the bureau liked him enough to try and secretly woo him.
Hellboy had been teasing him for it but John didn’t mind the good-natured ribbing. After all, he was just glad that Hellboy had finally gotten over his and Liz’s breakup enough to be back to his normal slightly annoying self. He had especially been worried that Hellboy would have problems coping with Valentine’s Day approaching since Hellboy was a romantic at heart and John knew that the guy had been looking forward to allowing his romantic nature to come out with Liz on the day.
“That’s a very fetching tie, John.” Abe commented as John walked into the library.
“Yeah, Myers, did your admirer get it for you?” Hellboy asked, his tone mocking.
“Actually, yes,” John fiddled with the new tie with a smile. “I was hoping that if I wore it around the bureau then I might catch whoever gave it to me.”
Hellboy snorted. “That’s dumb. You really should just wait for your admirer to come out to you.”
John sighed. “I know I put up with you all day, HB, but I’m honestly not very patient in certain aspects of life.”
Hellboy frowned. “Hey, what does that mean?”
Chuckling, John shrugged his shoulders. “It just means that I want to know who my admirer is now instead of waiting.”
“Well you probably don’t have to wait long. I bet he’ll come out to you on Valentine’s Day.” Hellboy shrugged as he flipped through a book, looking bored.
“How do you know that? And how do you know it’s a guy?” John asked.
“Smooth,” Abe commented as he picked a book from the shelf and began to study it.
Hellboy winced and John smiled. “You know who it is.” John accused. “You both do. Oh, HB, come on, just give me a hint.”
“I already did. And that was intentional too.” Hellboy pointed a finger at John. “You’ll be getting nothing more outta me, Myers.”
“Abe,” John asked nicely as he walked over to the other.
“Not my secret to tell.” Abe quickly smacked down the request.
“Is he at least cute? Or my type?” John asked.
“You got a type?” Hellboy asked right back.
“Of course,” John nodded. “Everyone has a type,” he frowned, “don’t they?” Hellboy shrugged. Sighing, John looked at the other two and crossed his arms over his chest. “Well fine, if you two won’t help me, I’ll just have to figure out who it is on my own.” He turned around and left the library as he began to plot how exactly he could figure out who his admirer was.
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
Alongside trying to figure out who his secret admirer was, John also had the problem of figuring out where Hellboy had gone while out on a mission.
Looking around the deserted park, John sighed and kept his hand wrapped around his gun. “Great, he took off without me again. He’s always doing this.” He mumbled to himself. He connected to the radio. “Hey, Blue, HB ran off on me again.”
“Are you surprised?” Abe asked in his usual, calm manner.
“No, but I am worried, even though you said this was a small mission. I mean, I don’t even know what kind of demon we’re going up against.” John continued to survey the park, watching for any sudden movements or any kind of movements at all.
“It’s a very low type of demon, very common around New York too. It’s called Seraphim, a serpent demon. Has the eyes and scales of a serpent, as well as the tongue and fangs, also moves in a rather serpent like motion. They also eat their prey hole and usually alive to digest slowly within them for days.” Abe read off through the connection. “They have arms and claws though, unlike serpents, so they can catch their prey better. Seraphim demons also have the ability to shed their skin.”
“So should I be looking for really big snake skin lying around?” John asked with a frown as his eyes dropped to the ground.
“Not exactly, but I’m still doing research. I’ll tell you more once I’ve finished reading up on these.” Abe informed.
“Okay, keep me updated. I don’t want to stumble onto a nest of these things or anything.” John shuddered at the very thought as he turned the connection off.
“Hey,” John jumped up, gun at the ready and aimed high as he spun around. “Whoa, now.” The man held up his hands and his eyes widened. He was dressed in jeans and a long sleeved black shirt. “Sorry to startle you, but I was just leaving from my job as a bartender and you look like you could use some help.”
“Sorry about the gun.” John quickly apologized as he dropped his gun. “I’m a, uh, cop and you really shouldn’t be out in this park right now, sir.”
“Sorry, officer, but cutting through this park is the quickest way back to my place and at this hour I kinda just want to head straight home. Are you here to figure out all the disappearances?” The man asked.
“Yes, actually, my partner and I are planning on putting them at a stop after tonight.” John informed.
“Your partner?” The man looked around. “I don’t really see any partner here with you.”
John smiled bitterly. “Yeah, I don’t really see one either.”
“So that means you’re alone?” The man asked, a smirk suddenly appearing on his face.
Tensing, John tightened his hold on his gun, making sure that his finger was on the trigger. “For the time being.”
“That should be just enough time.” The man reached up and grabbed his ears, pulling them and his skin off in the process.
John watched in horror as the man’s skin peeled off in an slimy layer, falling onto the ground to puddle around a long, snake tail. The demon towered over John, his body covered in grey scales and his eyes locked onto John as his snake tongue flicked out on his mouth to smell the air.
“Hellboy!” John called out as he raised his gun and began to fire.
The Seraphim didn’t even seem to feel the bullet as it slithered towards John.
“Ah, you know of Anung Un Rama?” The demon hissed lowly as he reached for John with clawed hands. “It’ll be a delight to eat you then.”
John fired again as he quickly backpedaled from the encroaching demon. “Hellboy!” John called out for help even as he continued to empty his bullets without effect on the demon.
“Hey, ugly.” Hellboy called out as he suddenly appeared behind John. He cocked The Samaritan and fired two shots, only one actually hitting the demon in the shoulder and causing his arm to be blasted off. The demon shrieked and clutched at the limbless shoulder as it hissed and shook its tail. It lunged at John with its mouth opened wide and John shouted.
Hellboy punched the Seraphim in the jaw with his right hand of doom, shattering one of its fangs. The Seraphim howled in agony as it roared back its head. Hellboy took the opportunity to let two more shots fly out of The Samaritan, ending the demon’s life.
“Thanks, Hellboy.” John panted in relief as he took a step back from the demon’s body. “I really didn’t feel like being eaten tonight.”
“Right, you should save that for your secret admirer,” Hellboy quipped as he took out a cigar and a match to light it.
“I’m going to ignore that,” John stated even as his face flushed a dark crimson. He took out his radio and signaled a cleanup crew. “So, that’s one down.” He commented as he looked at Hellboy. “How many more are there supposed to be?”
“More than we can get tonight,” Hellboy supposed. “Best we call it in and continue our search for their nest tomorrow.”
“Sounds good to me,” John agreed. “Abe will have more information by then anyways and maybe he’ll have some sort of idea of where their nest might be.” The two headed out of the park towards the garbage truck.

Each day drew closer to Valentine’s Day and each night brought Hellboy and John closer to finding the nest of the Seraphim demons. John had been so exhausted working the case that he hadn’t been able to figure out who his admirer was.
The day before Valentine’s Day had John’s secret admirer leaving him a note that stated he would be getting flowers delivered to him by his admirer personally. John’s stomach was a knotted mess with anticipation. He was desperate to learn who his admirer was before he had to come face to face with him. So he resorted to the option of checking the security cameras.
He went over the security film and his eyes went wide as he watched, day after day, as Hellboy delivered his gifts.
It had to be a joke. Hellboy couldn’t be his secret admirer. He was just messing with him. On Valentine’s Day, Hellboy would pull a huge prank on John and laugh at John for actually believing his elaborate joke. That had to be the case.
John wanted that more than the alternative.
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
John felt like hyperventilating. He glanced from one corner of the room to the other as a means of escape. His eyes fell on nothing but cats, some dirty clothes, and unhelpful blank television screens.
“HB,” John offered a smile but it faltered slightly. “Hellboy, I’m flattered, really.” He tried to think of something more to say but could not, for the life of him, figure out what he possibly could say, especially when Hellboy’s face seemed to light up.
“Yeah?” Hellboy prompted as he continued to hold the flowers out. “Well good,” he tried not to look so insecure and instead took on a smirk. “I mean, it wasn’t easy for me to get you all of these things so you’d better be flattered at the very least.” John simply nodded and actually took the offered bouquet. He didn’t have the heart to tell Hellboy that he really didn’t like daises since they reminded him of his previous-ex, who had been his only ex and the only girl he had ever been truly interested in.
“Um, Hellboy,” John managed to speak around the lump growing in his throat. “I am bisexual,” he began.
“I know,” Hellboy interrupted. “You didn’t freak out when I dropped the ‘he’ bomb the other day and I can smell it on you.”
“What?” John frowned, thrown for a curve at that comment.
Hellboy waved the comment off. “It’s a demon thing that we can smell the sexuality on people. It’s like a demon’s kind of gaydar.”
“Oh,” John blinked and then continued with his previous thought. “Well, I’m bisexual but I’ve never actually been with another man before, let alone a half-demon man.”
“That’s why we’ll take it slow, Boyscout. It’s not like I’m going to throw you down on my bed now,” Hellboy glanced over his shoulder at his bed and then turned his attention back on John. “Well, unless you tell me otherwise.”
John’s face quickly heated and he shook his head. “No, no, I like slow but, uh, HB, I thought you liked Liz?”
“We broke up, Myers.” Hellboy glared at the mentioning of her name. “You know that.”
“Yeah but, I mean, you still have feelings for her, don’t you?” John asked hesitantly.
Hellboy shrugged. “I’ve had feelings for her ever since I met her. She had never returned them. She finally gave me a shot once I had saved her life and stopped the world from ending, and even then she only put up with me for about a month. It wasn’t meant to be, so I’m moving on.” He looked at John pointedly. “And I can tell you’re thrilled about it.” Hellboy frowned.
“It’s not that,” John shifted slightly, suddenly feeling bad for hurting the big demon’s feelings.
“Don’t try and let me down softly; Liz never did. But, you know, it didn’t stop me, at least not right away since it took over a decade.” Hellboy smirked. “So like it or not, Boyscout, you’re gonna be my new obsession and that can get pretty dangerous if you don’t play your cards right.”
John laughed at the statement and looked down at the bouquet in his hands. Smiling softly, John met Hellboy’s gaze and asked, “So do you have any other plans for today or can I finally reciprocate?”
Hellboy’s eyes widened, caught off guard at John’s easy acceptance. “Well, I did ask the cooks to make something a little special in case you didn’t want to skip out into town for the night with me.”
“Planning on playing hooky with the man who’s supposed to make sure that you don’t do that?” John shook his head good naturedly. “Well, I wouldn’t want to ruin your plans; after all, ruining your chances of wooing me wouldn’t be very fair of me.”
Hellboy grinned. “Alright, let’s head out then, Myers. I know this perfect little place where the owner is an old friend of mine from the agency. He always lets me eat there after hours.”
“Sounds good to me,” John smiled as he moved to grab Hellboy’s hand, holding it in his own.
The two went topside through an underground sewer system which popped out near the edge of town. They started for the small restaurant. “He makes these great sandwiches. He’s got a list of about twenty different kinds so I always end up ordering all twenty, of course. And then his pie is pretty good too. Not as good as our cooks, but don’t tell Al I said that; I don’t wanna hurt the guy’s feelings.”
“Course not,” John chuckled as he walked alongside the larger being. John frowned when he heard something behind them. “Hellboy,” he started.
“Yeah, I heard it too.” Hellboy released John’s hand to grab the handle of The Samaritan. He turned around sharply and tensed. “Damn,” he cursed as he stared at the two Seraphim demons. The two hissed and quickly slithered away. “Wanna bet we’re close to their nest and they’re going for backup?”
“I’m already calling for our own backup.” John stated as he pulled out his radio.
“I told you being with me will be dangerous.” Hellboy sighed. “This will probably be our usual dates; interrupted by hunting down demons.”
John smiled. “Hellboy, I’m okay with that.”
Hellboy raised an eyebrow questioningly. “Really? Wow, maybe I finally picked the right person to crush on.”
Chuckling, John nodded. “I just know that no matter how dangerous our dates might be, the demons we’re going after are the ones who are really in danger.”
Hellboy scoffed. “Save the witty remarks for me, Boyscout. You just don’t got them.” He joked as he started to trail after the demons.
“Oh come on, I thought that was pretty good.” John complained as he hurried to keep up with Hellboy.
