Karai’s eyes widened as her sword sunk into him. His blood slithered down her weapon, staining her gloves. She couldn’t believe it, but she had killed him. She had killed Leonardo.
She always knew that if anyone was going to finally do the deed and end his life, it was going to be her. Still, she had hoped the moment would never come. For years she had given him the choice to hide away from her and her master. She kept him protected as long as she could.
The irony of stabbing him in the back was fitting. Especially since her aim had hit the one part that his shell didn’t protect, the chip on his shell that her father had caused decades ago. She was finishing what her father had started. She finally did what he had always wanted her to do.
She wasn’t filled with pride or accomplishment. She was filled with the lost of the only one she could ever picture being with. Leonardo was the only warrior that deserved such tender emotions from her, even though he had denied her time after time.
Raphael jumped at her and after a short fight; she had struck a killing blow to him as well. He had never been a match for her. He should have known better.
Karai watched as he used the last of his energy to move to Leonardo’s fallen form. He collapsed atop of him and she finally understood why he was never interested in her. Leonardo already had someone to be with. Karai inhaled deeply, spending that breath in mourning the fallen lovers.
“Karai,” She turned swiftly and her eyes widened once more as a bazooka blasted, aimed right at her. Her last thought was that her life had always been bitter-sweet at best.

“Mikey,” Don stared at him, a frown on his young face. Hesitantly he brought his hands up and cupped Mikey’s aged, marred face. “Oh, Mikey, what’s happened to you?” He wasn’t talking about the arm or the many new scars; he was talking about the frown that seemed to be permanently on his once smiling face. What had his younger brother been forced to bear without him around to help ease the load?
“You left, Donnie,” Mikey sighed, leaning into the touch. “You left us and we all fell apart.” Mikey’s expression grew cold and his single hand came up to grab Don’s wrist and tug it away from his face. “We couldn’t live without you. We were all too dependant on you back then.” Mikey took a step back but held Don’s wrist tight still, as though he was afraid to let go. “We won’t make that mistake again, I won’t, at least. You’re going to leave us again, Don, I know you will.” Mikey turned away and finally allowed Don’s hand to slip through his own as he carefully left.
“Mikey,” Don frowned and brought his hand up to his own cheek, the whisper of Mikey’s touch still there.
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
Don’s back was to him, he was caught up in his work again.
Mikey scowled. That was dangerous; an enemy could come up behind him and kill him. He wanted to reach forward and scare Don, yell at him for his mistakes. He wanted to reach forward and feel that soft skin against his own, to pull the smaller turtle against himself and never let go.
Mikey’s hand floated in the air, an inch above Don’s shoulder. He could so easily touch him again; touch him like Don had touched him the day before, with an intimacy that he had been denied for thirty years. But he was becoming too desperate for Don’s touches, he’d start to depend and expect them soon. He couldn’t have that. Don might leave them again and he can’t be hurt like that any more. It would kill him.
Slowly, Mikey left the room and leaned against the wall outside. “Damn,” he muttered miserably.

One moment they were all there. Each of them doing their own thing, Mikey goofing off, Leo doing extra training, Raph working on his bike, and Don was talking to April on the computer. Then the Ultimate Drako came and everything changed, for the worse, though they didn’t know it at the time.
They were sent to different places. Mikey went a world of superheroes, Raph to a racing tournament, Leo to a different world with animals similar to himself, and Don went to another world as well. He just never came back from it.
They were all returned to their original time and fought the Ultimate Drako, defeating him, barely. They had one less soldier in their ranks, one less member of their team, one brother less for their family. What kind of victory was that?
None of them understood why Don had disappeared and never reappeared like they all did. Where had he possibly gone? When would he come back? Would he ever come back? Did he even want to come back?
They all missed him dearly. Some of them missed him too much. They couldn’t move on in their lives well enough. They began to fall apart, as a brotherhood, as a team, as a family. They were at each other’s throats.
Everything reminded them of their lost brother. They wished he hadn’t disappeared on them.

“He’s been captured,”
“I don’t care,”
“They’re probably torturing him as we speak,”
“I don’t care.”
“They might kill him,”
“Mike, I don’t care.”
“He’s our brother, Raph,” Mikey growled. “How can you be so heartless? If Don was here he would--”
“Leo hasn’t been my brother for years.” Raph snarled, instantly cutting Mikey off of the old Don-guilt-maneuver. “If you want to risk your life savin’ his worthless piece of ass, go for it. I’m out,” Raph turned sharply on his heel and stormed out of the underground lair. Mikey sighed and raised his single hand to rub at his temples as April placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“Let’s go save, Fearless.” Mikey stated bravely and started to gather the troops.
_-_-_-_-_-_-
They finally made it to the cells. Mikey ordered the others to get to work opening the other doors; any enemy of the Shredder was a friend of theirs. He and April headed straight to Leo’s cell. They opened the metal door and looked into the room.
Leo’s front was to the corner, his back to all of them, his shell working as a protective barrier with the help of the walls. He couldn’t see them when they all walked in. “Bro,” Mikey hesitantly spoke first. Leo’s tense form jumped a little, obviously surprised at hearing his brother.
“Mikey,” Leo’s head could suddenly be seen as he pulled out of his fetal position. Slowly he turned around to face everyone. “Is that really you, Mikey?” He stood unsteadily and his hands groped out in front of him, desperately searching.
Mikey gasped, as he looked at Leo’s unseeing eyes. They were clouded over and it was obvious that he could no longer use them. They had taken Leo’s sight from him.
“Come on, Leo, we’re getting you out of here.” Mikey stepped forward and grabbed Leo’s hand in his own, tugging gently. “Just let me lead you for a while, okay?”
“I don’t have a choice,” Leo scowled, “Since I can’t see anymore. Who else is here?”
“The troops,” April spoke up.
Leo nodded. “Is Raph…?”
“We couldn’t get a hold of him,” Mikey lied, rather glad that Leo couldn’t see for that moment. Leo could always tell when he was lying. He led Leo into the hall and glanced at his men as they helped others of out cells. “All right, troops, time to head back to the base before we overstay our welcome.” He quickly tugged Leo around and ran out to the exit, brother in tow.
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
“You’re in charge of the troops now, Mikey, permanently.” Leo announced as he sheathed his swords.
“What are you talking about?” Mikey frowned. “You’re pretty much back to normal, Leo; you can lead again.”
“I’m done leading.” Leo shook his head, his sunglasses staying in place thanks to the tight elastic strip April had connected to them.
“You’re letting them win,” Mikey scowled. He’d never really been in charge of a team before; he wasn’t ready for that kind of responsibility. It was bad enough having to plan a way to free Leo.
Leo shrugged. “Raph was willing to let them win too. Besides,” Leo sighed and walked to the door. He held his hand out confidentially and gripped the handle, tugging the door open. “There’s nothing worth fighting for anymore. Sorry,” Then he left.
Mikey stared at the closed door and threw his nunchakus at it, the thud echoing around the room. “Don would have never given up. Don would have held the family together. Don wouldn’t let Leo and Raph turn their back on family like I did.” He sighed and dropped to the floor, staring at the stump of an arm he had. “If I was Don, I would stay wherever the hell he is and never come home.”

Donatello looked around at his brothers, all of them in the same room and not trying to gut one another for apparently the first time in way too long. He was sad to hear that they fell so far apart in his apparent absence. He couldn’t believe he had been gone for so long.
But the evidence was before him. They were so old. Truthfully, they were only around forty-seven or so. But the world that they lived in made them older than they should have been.
The fights that they lost without him fighting beside them aged them greatly. The friends they saw die without his medical expertise made them gain years in a few seconds and weight on their shoulders. The father they were forced to bury because he hadn’t been there to help forced them out of their childhood. The brother that disappeared on them added wrinkles to their faces.
If he had the chance, he would gladly take the years away from all of them and place them upon himself. If he could find the fountain of youth, he’d connect it to their water supply. If only he could turn back time to a year where his brothers were young and carefree just to show them how they should be.
But he wasn’t a miracle worker. He wasn’t a magician with a spell that could fix everything. He was just a boy who needed to help his brothers. And he would help them any way he could.
