This wasn’t a life anymore. He was no longer living, he was just barely surviving. Each day he had to be faster, stealthier, better, or else he’d just be dead. There was never a moment to rest, never a chance to relax, not since he left the others behind and set out on his own. He didn’t regret that decision to be alone though. He couldn’t handle knowing that their family no longer was whole, so he ran from the other pieces that were left of it.

It never mattered if he tried to attack the Shredder’s army or if he was simply trying to find some meager scraps of food. He could be fighting what could possibly be his last battle ever or he could go another day without food and wonder if it would cost him his life. He wondered what would end up killing him but such thoughts only proved to be distracting.

Whether he was losing to his own bodily needs or to the Shredder’s minions, he knew that he had to keep pushing himself forward. So when the sun rose over the bleak city, he would run as fast as he could and never stop.

Author's Note: Written for 100_situations prompt #59: Eat

Two days ago, Raph had ran away from Shredder’s army and managed to hide. He had stumbled down a dark alley and quickly found a way into one of the buildings, giving the army the slip. He apparently had broken into someone’s home for a startled, older black man was staring at him. Raph tried to say or do something, but he only passed out from exhaustion.

That was two days ago.

“C’mon now, ya gotta eat.” The bowl was pushed into his hands as two hands pushed on his shoulders, forcing Raph to sit. “I love good chili myself. My ulcer gives me shit for it though. Fuck you, ulcer, I say.” The older man grinned and lifted his spoon, “Down the hatch.” He offered and then ate his own food as Raph only continued to stare at his bowl.

The man was kind and had cared for Raph’s wounds and given him a place to rest while he recovered. He never pressed for Raph’s name or story and didn’t seem to mind that Raph wasn’t human. In return, he never gave his own name but he did give plenty of kindness.

Raph glanced around the meager living area and frowned. “How can ya be givin’ me yer food? It don’t look like ya got much ta spare around here.”

The man shrugged his broad shoulders casually. “I’m not the kinda guy to pass up a chance to help, and you look like ya need some help, son.” He stood up and grimaced as he rubbed at his back. “Trust me when I say ya gotta enjoy your youth, ‘cause being older ain’t much fun, ‘specially in these times.” He got two glasses and poured water from a pitcher into them. Giving a glass to Raph, he gave a little toast. “Here’s to a future without ulcers and overlords.”

Raph smirked. “I’ll drink ta that.” Their glasses went TINK and they drank with smiles on their faces.
