“Robin,” he stared at me as if he couldn’t believe his eyes. I could tell he was disgusted with my appearance, with my behavior, with what I had become. But I no longer cared about him or his thoughts of me. He wasn’t my father any more, no, I have a better father.
“Batman,” I raised the weapon I had just taken from his own company and I am it carefully at his chest. The perfect shot that my master always told me about. “I want to thank you for taking me in all those years ago; if it wasn’t for you I never would have met Slade.”
He tensed beneath his large cloak that he had once used to envelope me in a comforting embrace. “You don’t want to do this, Robin. The Titans told me about Slade and what he’s doing to you. There aren’t any of his cameras here, he can’t watch us, now just put it down and I can help you.”
“I don’t need your help, I don’t even want it.” I held the devise even tighter and glanced around the
I pulled the trigger but he reacted faster. He had moved and took the blast in his shoulder instead of through the chest like I had hoped for. He grunted but acted as though he wasn’t bleeding and tackled me to the ground. I knew I couldn’t really fight him, Slade told me I was strong but not strong enough to take down Batman in hand-to-hand combat. He had warned me that I only had one shot, that the element of surprise was all that I had.
But I knew that if I failed my master would still rescue me. So as Batman tried to talk to me while I lied pinned beneath him, I merely smiled a cruel twisted grin. He gave up trying to talk to me once he realized his words weren’t connecting and he carted me off to Arkham, claiming that I could get help.
So here I sit, in my newest home until Slade comes to break me out and take me back to his home. My hands are wrapped tightly around myself in a straightjacket and I’m still smiling. I understand why Joker is always smiling now; it’s quite addictive to keep smiling.
“Hello, Batman,” he stands before the plexi-glass cell and looks in on me. “Aren’t you proud of me, dad?”
“We’ll get you help, Robin,” he says it in his unemotional voice but I know on the inside he’s dying at seeing me like this. “And I swear I’ll make Slade pay for what he’s done to you.”
I rock gently on the small cot they provide all of their ‘guests’ in the asylum as I continue to smile. “Whatever you say,” I chuckle coldly. “Do you know what I had been through while I went through my training with Slade?” he shakes his head and I’m kind of surprised; I thought he knew everything. “That’s a shame, if you knew then you’d understand why I’m like this.”

“Now then, Robin; my apprentice,” Slade smirked, loving the fact that he could finally call the boy his apprentice. “Time to get you out of your brightly colored excuse for a uniform and into a more fitting styled one.” As if out of nowhere Slade stepped into the spotlight that he had left Robin standing in while the boy thought over the decision he had to make. He still hadn’t answered but Slade knew he wasn’t going to refuse, not when his friends’ lives were on the line.
Robin caught the box thrown at him and opened it to find black spandex bottoms, a black and orange spandex top, a new pointed mask, a pair of metal laced boots, a silver belt, and many pieces of armor. Robin scowled at his new uniform and then up at Slade. He hated the man more than he even thought was capable and he knew that his hatred of the man would only grow the more Slade would insist on this unfair deal.
“Well, get to changing, apprentice.” Slade was a patient man but he had already waited long enough to get Robin under his control and he was sick of waiting to get the boy into new clothes.
Robin’s masked eyes blinked and Slade watched in amusement as he pondered how the mask could do that. “Do you have a spare room perhaps?” Robin asked and then paused for a moment. “Or maybe, tell me if this sounds ridiculous, but could you at least not stare right at me as I change?” Robin growled as he removed his cape. His eyes were narrow slits behind his mask.
“But, Robin, there’s no fun in that.” Just as soon as the words have left the man’s mouth Robin’s anger just as quickly disappears and was replaced with fear and disgust. He wondered what he had just gotten himself into but he quickly pushed the thought away.
“You’re not seriously going to watch me change…are you?” Robin twitched and took a step back.
“Of course, I’m not about to miss your little transformation from discarding those disgustedly bright clothes for my dark ones. But if it makes you uncomfortable,” Slade purred as he stepped into the darkness. “Does this help?”
“Not at all,” Robin gulped. “In fact, that only makes it worse.”
“Tough, Robin, now start changing, we have a lot of things to go over for today.” Slade’s voice echoed over the gears. Robin shivered but removed his gloves.
He didn’t know where Slade was now so he couldn’t turn his back to the man. But what really bothered him was the fact that he couldn’t see Slade, see what the man might be doing. Robin tried to ignore the fact that Slade was watching him and he quickly pulled off his shirt. He picked up his new black and orange shirt and glared at the sterling ‘S’ emblem. He slipped the shirt on and glanced down at his discarded shirt and his heart panged for the shinning ‘R’ to be back with him.
He sighed miserably and pulled off each boot as he balanced on one foot and then switched to the other one. Pausing, his hands on his belt, he listened for any signs of Slade. He heard nothing but the gears. Reaching into the box, Robin picked up the pointed mask; he’d save his pants for last.
He closed his eyes and removed his mask in one swift movement. Then he placed the other mask on and opened his eyes as he straightened it on his face. His mask fluttered to the floor and his hands came to his belt once more. He bit his lip and creased his brow in worry as he hesitated.
Biting back his fear, Robin loosened his belt and pulled down his pants. “Mmm…Slower, Robin, and smile for your master.” Robin tensed and franticly looked around himself; he only saw darkness.
Blushing, he quickly pulled on his new pants and snapped the belt on securely. He was thankful that Slade hadn’t wanted him to change his underwear as well. But surely the man was only teasing him with that comment…right?
Robin pulled on his new boots and placed the correct armor into place on his legs. They felt heavy and caused the tight uniform to become even clingier.

“Quite your crying, Robin, I know it wasn’t that bad. You even enjoyed yourself on some level.”
“Exactly,” he sobbed as he leaned his head on the cold floor. “How could I? What’s wrong with me?” Robin gripped the sides of his head tightly and tugged at his hair. “Now I’m crying and in front of you of all people! I’m pathetic.” Robin’s sobs stopped but the tears continued to trail out from under his mask.
Slade kneeled next to Robin and pulled the boy into his arms. “It’s understandable Robin, and I don’t think any less of you, after all, you are still just a boy.” Robin remained silent but nodded his head once. He subconsciously snuggled closer to Slade in the man’s hold while he searched for comfort of any sort. Slade petted Robin’s head in a gentle pattern.
They remained in that position until Robin’s tears finally stopped flowing. Robin sighed and leaned his head against Slade’s armored shoulder. “What do we do now?”
“I continue training you, Robin, forming you into the perfect apprentice that I can love.” Robin tensed in Slade’s arm.
“Are you saying you didn’t do that out of love? That you don’t love me?” Robin’s voice was small as he curled into himself slightly.
“Robin, I need a strong reason to love you and being my apprentice gives me an excuse to some degree.” Slade continued to stroke the boy’s hair.
“So do you love me? Because I’m not sure how I’m supposed to feel about you and it’s confusing.” Robin leaned into the soft touch of Slade’s large hand.
“I’m not good with this sort of thing,” Slade paused as he stopped running his fingers through Robin’s locks. “But you’re a smart boy, Robin, I’m sure you know the answer.”
Robin nodded his head. “It’s confusing, everything is but this really is. I just don’t get us Slade and that worries me.”
“Don’t worry Robin; we have the rest of our lives to figure everything out.” Slade slowly stood up and Robin did as well. “But all you need to know for now is to just do what I say and everything will be okay.”
“That sounds unfair to me Slade.”
“Tough.”
